Texas Water Safari 2025

The Cowboys prepare to make their way to the starting line.
The Falls located in San Marcos and inspired the shirt design.

Back on March 24th, I received information that the Texas Water Safari Facebook page was looking for t-shirt design entries for this year's race. Within less than a week's notice, I had a couple of late nights and drafted a few submissions. Within less than 2 weeks, I was informed I had won! What a blessing!
I'd like to take this opportunity to recognize Waylon, who knew the culture of the TWS and helped me incorporate a few key aspects of what makes the race what it is: filled with heart and community, and a passion for the sport.
"TEXAS" has 2 canoers navigating their boat to the water below the small falls, seen heavily close to the "X."
"WATER" has silhouettes of the original 6 cowboys who began it all, with one who recently passed.
"SAFARI" includes Patty, seen in the negative space of the first "A," who volunteers to take all media coverage throughout, and her commitment is not unnoticed.
Much like the paddlers, it was a team effort to create this design, and I look forward to getting more involved in the years ahead!

Waylon & I take a photo by the finish line, located off the coast.

"On Thin Ice"
My interpretation of the theme “on thin ice” relates to the subject of alcoholism. The narrative is that this person drinking whiskey “on the rocks” (an ice reference) needs help for their dire situation. Despite cautions to refrain from drinking, it is still something this person struggles with. I kept the identity of the person neutral so that the interpretation of the person could be either wife or husband.
Most people might assume a man, but I want viewers to consider everyone has the possibility of alcohol struggle. The child’s sticky note does not specify either parent, just that they are loved. The picture frame is dusty, suggesting it has been a while since the “happy days.” The big bottle of whiskey overshadows the AA brochure and sticky notes, with only a small highlight emphasizing that “you,” the person struggling, is loved deeply. However, the glass’ reflection shines brightly from the light source above, showing a heavy attraction to the substance.
This illustrates “on thin ice” because the person has the decision to become better and improve their health… or face death from liver failure (it’s the last straw). Please note various image sources were used as references to capture the glass and ice textures, in addition to getting angles proportionately accurate (as best as possible)
